A family alpaca farm in the Périgord Vert
Alpaganie is home to around thirty alpacas in Champniers-et-Reilhac, in the far north of the Dordogne. A peaceful corner of countryside, with fields, ponds and animals that come over to see who's arriving.
Corinne and Éric chose to keep their farm small, so that every animal is known, named and halter-trained. It's this daily work that makes our alpacas so relaxed with visitors — and explains their success at shows.
The alpaca in a nutshell
The alpaca is a camelid from the Andes, a smaller and woollier cousin of the llama. Gentle, curious and quiet, it doesn't bite and has neither horns nor hooves — hence its reputation as an easy animal to approach.
Its fleece is one of the most sought-after natural fibres: warmer than sheep's wool and free of lanolin, so hypoallergenic. It comes naturally in around twenty colours, from white to deep black, through grey and fawn.
Our farm focuses in particular on black and grey colours, the hardest to achieve with a fine, even fibre.
The other residents
The alpacas aren't alone. Donkeys, goats, miniature horses, dogs and even a pig share the farm, roaming freely among the visitors. The birds, for their part, await you in the immersive aviary.
